Another milestone has been reached in the regeneration of Stockport’s historic Underbanks, as 50 high-quality apartments by Hall & Co near completion.
Located on Churchgate in the heart of the town centre, the new development - St Mary’s Gate - brings a mix of one- and two-bedroom homes that are all sold, underlining strong demand for well-designed homes in one of Greater Manchester’s most exciting neighbourhoods.
The scheme adds further momentum to the £1bn regeneration of Stockport town centre and reinforces the Underbanks’ growing reputation as a destination for independent businesses, creative talent and modern urban living. Once described by The Sunday Times as “one of the coolest little corners of the country,” the area has seen significant investment in recent years, led by Stockport Council and partners.
Developers Hall & Co, who previously restored Bank Chambers into the award-winning Profolk co-working hub, acquired four town centre sites from the council to deliver high-spec homes that respect and enhance the historic character of the area. Construction is already underway at Albion House, with further plans for 27 more homes at 48 Churchgate now submitted for planning.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “This is exactly the kind of development that shows how far Stockport has come - high-quality homes, thoughtfully designed, and right at the heart of our historic town centre.
“The transformation of the Underbanks is a real success story, and we’re proud to be working with partners like Hall & Co to bring more life, more people, and more opportunity back into this unique part of Stockport.
“It’s another important step in our wider regeneration plans - building a town centre that works for everyone and has a confident, sustainable future, as we continue to deliver the UK’s largest town centre regeneration.”
Jamie Hall, Development Director at Hall & Co, said: “We are immensely proud of the delivery of St Mary’s Gate. The quality and finish are a testament to great design and hard work from both our construction team and Ollier Smurthwaite Architects. We couldn’t be more excited that by the end of May, over 100 new people will be living in Stockport Old Town, which will provide a boost to the local economy.
“We are currently in the middle of the construction of Albion and pre-construction on Coopers Brow, with both schemes set to be complete within the next 14 months. We plan to and are delighted that we can continue to play a small, but significant role in the regeneration of Stockport Town Centre.”
Beyond housing, the Underbanks is flourishing as a vibrant, creative and independent hub. A series of council-led, community projects and ongoing upgrades to historic shopfronts and streetscapes are breathing new life into the area.
The Underbanks is fast becoming a destination for independent businesses, attracting a growing mix of creative retailers, bars, and eateries, fuelling a thriving local food and drink scene. With its strong sense of place and community spirit, it is emerging as one of Greater Manchester’s most exciting quarters to live, work, and explore — a standout success story in Stockport’s ongoing transformation.
