Delivering Growth in Bury

A vibrant centre of culture, history, retail, industry, leisure and opportunity.

Bury is a key retail destination in North Manchester. It is strategically located close to Manchester City Centre and has excellent transportation links across Greater Manchester. As six proud towns, the borough is strengthened by the individual and diverse identities of each area and an overarching sense of community.

Home to proud industrial heritage, Bury has become a place where digital economies thrive. With a growing number of small business startups and a beating retail heart, it’s no wonder FTSE 100 companies like JD Sport are trusting Bury to host as it grows into the title of an internationally recognised market.

Looking to the future, plans to transform the size and shape of the borough in the decades to come are moving forward, including thousands more much-needed homes. Unlocking unprecedented employment potential with one site alone at Northern Gateway offering 1.2m square metres of industrial and warehousing space, generating around 17,000 new jobs, and adding £1bn GVA to the Greater Manchester economy.

Bury Town Centre

Bury town centre offers an opportunity for transformative change over the next 10 years, including a reimagined market, complete with regenerated events space and market venue, complementing the unique retail, cultural and heritage assets already there. To remain a vibrant and thriving centre, Bury is adapting to changes in the UK retail market, open to inward investment, and encouraging high-quality, mixed-use development along with retaining key businesses and communities.

The Bury Masterplan provides a clear plan and vision to ensure the future sustainability of the borough's principal town centre between now and 2040. Working jointly with Bruntwood, Bury Council has plans for new town centre regeneration across Mill Gate Shopping Centre and surrounding areas over the next two decades. Spanning 15 acres, it will become a vibrant and dynamic mixed-used development incorporating retail, leisure, hospitality and residential, with sustainability, education and wellness at its heart.

Prestwich

A new Prestwich Village is under development just a few miles from Manchester City Centre, which will emerge from the partnership between Bury Council and place maker Muse. They formed joint venture Prestwich Regeneration LLP to advance the £100m+ regeneration of the town centre, delivering over 200 homes, new retail, health and leisure opportunities. The masterplan for Prestwich will regenerate the Longfield Centre site in particular, with plans to produce a community hub, market hall and travel hub to accommodate the increased housing offer. These proposals will cement Prestwich as one of the best places to live and spend time in the Northwest.

Radcliffe

Ambitious plans have been set out for Radcliffe and are advancing at pace. Bringing real progress towards new services, homes and facilities. A new enterprise centre, which will offer flexible working space, meeting rooms and business support services, is becoming a reality with Radcliffe Library relocating to the first floor to allow the enterprise centre adaptation works to go ahead.

In terms of housing plans, three sites across the town centre in Radcliffe are promised over 600 new homes, including 400 at the East Lancs Papermill. A further 3,500 homes are proposed for nearby Elton Reservoir, with Bury Council working with Peel Land to bring these ambitious plans to life.

Ramsbottom

Looking to build upon its position as a visitor destination, thanks to the ongoing success of the East Lancashire Steam Railway, Ramsbottom Town Centre Plan sets out a vision for the town centre which will support the town's ongoing success and guide future interventions in the short, medium and long term.

Following a period of public consultation, plans have been finalised to develop a larger and built-for-purpose civic space and improve pedestrianisation across the area. The plans hope to support its growing population of self-employed freelancers and the increased need for public workspaces. Creating a network of external places where the community can come together, both formally and informally.

A Borough Moving Forward

With ambitious regeneration projects across its key towns, Bury is positioning itself as a modern, dynamic, and forward-thinking borough. As it embraces change and investment, it remains rooted in its rich heritage while shaping an exciting future for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
